The Forestry program is a joint partnership with Texas A&M Forest Service and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. We focus on serving the citizens of Texas with innovative, decision support tools and applications, high-quality education programs, applied research addressing pine and hardwood production silviculture, restoration and management of natural forest ecosystem, forest health issues and challenges for small-acreage landowners, and general forest management support.
The forestry program also provides leadership for the Texas forestry community and assist leaders in identifying, planning, conducting, and evaluating education and applied research programs in traditional forestry, forest health, and protection, ecosystem service, woody bioenergy, water quality. We provide robust, in-service training that provides educators and service provides with specialized knowledge and skills. Our program works closely with individuals and groups to identify important forestry issues and concerns and then delivers research-based solutions for these issues.
Much of our program revolves around the design, development, and implementation of web-based tools, reports, publications, field demonstrations, applied research trials. We actively participate in professional organizations, keep up to date on the subject matter through the review, evaluation, adaptation, and application of research findings. We present regularly at professional conferences and foster collaborative relationships with practitioners, research professionals, and extension specialists throughout Texas as well as the forestry sector of the Southern United States.
Timber Production Silviculture
Both pine and hardwood timber are economically important crops in Texas. The forestry program works hard to deliver science-based silviculture advice, web-based decision support systems, and training to promote the sustainable production of timber and non-timber forest products.
