Malta Star Thistle can be found growing in disturbed calcareous soils of the Edwards Plateau and the South Texas Plains. It is an upright plant branching in the uppermost half and reaching a height of 6 to 24 inches. The leaves are lobed near the base and are about 2 to 4 inches long. The upper leaves are narrow, 1 1/4 inches long and have margins that extend down the stem giving it a winged appearance. The yellow flowers are 1/2 to 5/8 inch tall with spine-tipped phyllaries. Malta Star Thistle blooms from April to June.
