Orange Zexmenia can be found in dry gravelly, calcareous, and rocky soils of the South Texas Plains and the Edwards Plateau. It can reach a height of 1 to 2 1/2 feet with long stems baring a single flower. The yellowish-orange flower head consists of several disk flowers and seven to fifteen ray flowers. Orange Zexmenia blooms fromMay to September. The stems and leaves are covered with stiff hairs. The leaves measure two to three inches in length with coarsely-toothed margins. The leaves are eaten by white-tailed deer and cattle.
