Common Sandbur can be found growing throughout Texas in various soil types. It is considered a weedy plant of pastures and lawns. This plant can be upright or it can grow low and spreading on the ground. The leaves are flat and thin and can reach a length of 7 inches and a width less than 1/4 of an inch. The spikes are approximately 1/2 to 3 inches in length. The seeds are burs covered with 8 to 40 spines. Common Sandbur blooms during the summer and fall. This plant can provide good forage for livestock before the burs develop, but the spines on the burs are very stiff and can cause injury to the mouths of the animals that might feed upon it.
