Johnsongrass grows in fields and sanitary landfills of the South Texas Plains and Edwards Plateau, but is native to Europe and Africa. This invasive bunchgrass can reach a height of 20 to 72 inches and tends to be very rhizomatous. The leaves are flat and blue-green in color with a distinctive white midrib. The seedhead is a four to 24 inch open panicle and can flower as long as conditions allow. It has fair forage value for wildlife and good forage value for livestock, but can be toxic when the plant is stressed.
