Kleingrass, a native of Africa, is an erect grass reaching a height of 20 to 47 inches and growing from a knotty base. Kleingrass was introduced to the Edwards Plateau area as a forage grass. It grows in a variety of soils and climates but does not do well in cold weather. Kleingrass has fair economic value for wildlife but a good economic value for livestock. However, it can be poisonous if it develops a fungus which is known to cause photosensitization in goats and sheep. Kleingrass is drought tolerant, but may need irrigation and fertilization for healthy forage production.
