Southwestern Bristlegrass grows in open woodlands and shaded canyons of the Edwards Plateau and South Texas Plains. This loosely tufted grass can reach a height of 2 to 4 feet. The stems are usually single and the nodes have small hairs. The leaves are 6 to 12 inches long and 1/2 inch wide with fine hairs. The seed heads have bristles found below the seed that are 1/2 to 1 1/4 inches long. Southwestern Bristlegrass is a shade tolerant grass and blooms from May to November.
