Black Dalea is a low, spreading shrub which grows up to 3 feet tall. It grows on calcareous soils of the Hill Country and South Texas Plains. The violet flowers are borne on spikes that are 1/3 to 1/2 inch long and bloom between September and October. The leaves are divided into thirteen to seventeen leaflets, each 1/12 to 1/4 inches long. Black Dalea tends to be drought resistant and is sometimes browsed by livestock.
