Brasil is a shrub or tree that can reach a height of 30 feet. Brasil can be found in dry soil of the Edwards Plateau and South Texas Plains. The leaves are small (1/3 to 1 1/2 inches long and 1/3 to 1/2 inches wide) with smooth edges. The small green flower blooms in spring and summer. The branches may have thorns and tend to form thickets. The fruit is a berry and is red at first and then turns black. The leaves are browsed by white-tailed deer. The fruit is sweet and eaten by coyotes, raccoons, white-tailed deer, quail and other birds. Small mammals, quail, and other birds use Brasil for protection, nesting and roosting.
