Prickly Ash is thorny shrub attaining a height of 3 to 15 feet. It can be found growing in sandy or gravelly soils of the Edwards Plateau and South Texas Plains. The leaves are 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches long and divided into 3 to 5 leaflets, each about 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches long with crinkled edges. The greenish flowers are small and bloom in the spring. The reddish-brown fruit is eaten by a number of species of birds.
